November 24th is National Sardine Day. They might be packed with water, oil, tomato sauce or even mustard but they have been cleaned and cooked and are packed in an airtight container and are ready for you to eat.  Some people are afraid to even taste these small, silver fish but sardines have a delicious taste that is loved by millions across the United States.  This is their special day, and they are celebrated each year on November 24 on National Sardines Day. 🐟 .*. We have Napoleon to thank for canned sardines, but who can we thank for getting these treasures to Nineteenth Century Settler outposts, so that the Jewish community had fish in mustard sauce for shabbos, in their new world, where fresh fish had become a memory? Our man, Smous: (The following extract is from Jewish News, November 2015.) The footsore smous, the itinerant trader who trudged and trundled between farmsteads selling all manner of articles to farmers and their families, has become a figure of legend within South African Jewish memory.  Itinerant commerce was often a rite of passage for Jewish men newly arrived from eastern Europe. It offered several attractions to young immigrants with few material resources: independence and self-employment, the prospect of advancement through hard work, and the promise of eventually owning a store. It worked as an engine of migration and mobility, drawing immigrants deep into the South African interior. And it acted as an engine of economic mobility.  Although Jews were not the first to traipse the South African  countryside in search of customers, they were prime beneficiaries of the vast expansion of rural markets during and after the discovery of diamonds and gold. With much exaggeration, a wit identified the four stages of peddling by Jews as “1st, ‘Mit a pack on his back’; 2nd, ‘Mit a horse and wagon’; 3rd, ‘Mit a store’; 4th, ‘Mit a bank or bankrupt’.” Yet for every plutocrat who began as a plodding peddler, legions more became modest storekeepers in small towns across South Africa.  #sardinesinmustard #smous #jewishfoodhistory #southafricanfoodhistory #eatinggrahamstownonfoot #sardines #smoushistory #tinnedfish #instafood #sardine_eater #SardineEater

Sardines are an excellent source of Omega 3, Calcium and Protein. A single portion can provide 350mg Calcium. So important for anyone on a dairy free diet or at risk of osteoporosis.🐟🍋🐟🍋🐟🍋🐟🍋🐟🍋🐟🍋🐟🍋🐟🍋🐟 Lightly break up the sardines with a fork, add chopped red onion, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, broccoli florets, lettuce and a squeeze of lemon. Enjoy in a toasted pitta pocket or roll up a spoonful of salad in a large lettuce leaf. Good gluten free pittas available now. 🐟🍋🐟🍋🐟🍋🐟🍋🐟🍋🐟🍋🐟 #sardines #sardineeater #fish #oilyfish #omega3 #healthyfats #protein #healthylunchideas #lunchbox #glutenfreelunch #glutenfree #dairyfree #calcium #nutritiousanddelicious #foodintolerance #preventosteoporosis #healthyheart #salad #5aday #pitta #mediterraneandiet

My initial reason for cutting out meat and dairy out of my diet came from experiencing a massive amount of personal suffering and not wanting any other being to have to suffer like I have. I then started to feel the incredible health benefits of avoiding these foods and replacing them with more produce. I spent years in so much pain that I could hardly leave my bedroom, and I will not support any industry that has any being cramped in small spaces and suffering. This includes dairy. The newest technology involves cows never going outside, and utters so full they nearly hit the ground (trust me, members of my extended family own a dairy farm and it is horrifying). Calves are ripped from their mothers when they're born and the boys are sold for veal. Technology is not synonymous with advancement. Admittedly, I am not extremely well informed on the topic of fish, but i do know that they do live a free life and suffer only briefly at their death so that we (I) can consume them. I don't eat large fish like tuna that are at the top of the food chain whose capture leads to the destruction of our ecosystems. Also, fish don't take care of their young; If I'm not eating somebody's kid, I'm fine with it. Although I feel passionately about reducing suffering by not eating meat and dairy, I also respect people's food choices. If I refused to coexist with meat eaters, I'd have no family and barely any friends, haha. I also understand that our connection to food runs deep, and that if I preach, I could be insulting someone's culture, their lifestyle and their parents. This is the philosophy that jives with my moral compass.  Im having a gorgeous picnic in Trinity Bellwoods right now and onto some yoga after I digest. 😊 Amazing new travelling knife by @theopinelproject from @oldfaithfulshop with a safety feature. Sardines (jam packed with omega 3s and tons more nutritive goodness!), Dijon mustard, chopped onion, and capers, mashed with a fork on a sourdough bun from a Portuguese bakery in my hood called Nova Era. So amazingly satisfying. #pescatarian #fish #sardines #SardineEater #omega3 #sandwich #picnic #trinitybellwoods #moralphilosophy #🎣 #compassion #health
