VANCAMP'S BY CHICKEN OF THE SEA: BONELESS & SKINLESS

APPEARANCE:

NUTRITION:
N/A

PRODUCT OF: THAILAND

INGREDIENTS:
Sardines, Soybean Oil, Water, Salt

PRICE: 1.40

OVERALL:
A very strong fish aroma upon opening. Several pieces of fillets in the tin. A dry fish, almost a rubbery texture. (chewy) Rib bones are all throughout this tin, if you are against bones: stay away from these. These may be good in a recipe of sorts. I would not eat again plain.no sardines.

  1. I appreciate this review as I have been looking for cheaper sardines. I came across the differently packaged Chicken of the Sea sardines at Dollar Tree and was wondering what they tasted like. Recently had Northern Catch in oil from ALDI; scaly and more suited as a cat treat.

  2. I will add that the smell of the Lightly Smoked in oil flavor smells horrible. I would rather have Possum Brand(were my favorite and are no longer available) or Beach Cliff. I may have just gotten a bad can, but the smell made me throw them directly in the garbage. Beach Cliff brand smells fishy, but Van Camp's smells like rotting dead fish. I just couldn't do it. Like I said, I may have gotten a bad can, but the exp. date was 2015.

  3. I have had the same experience that Matt had. The sardines were a product of Canada instead of Thailand, but opening the can revealed a miasma reminiscent of diesel exhaust. I wouldn't describe it as a fishy odor, or even a rotten odor, but something was definitely off. I was craving sardines, but they sadly had to go right down the drain. I'm not sure if it's the "smoke flavor" that we're getting or what, but there's definitely a process issue.

  5. I'm still new to the sardine field and only eating them for a week. I still eat the grocery store Chicken of the Sea and Beach Cliff, I like both brands the mustard sauce and louisiana hot sauce. Not yet a conniseur like ya'll. Seems to really do away with my neck and back inflammation pain, sardines really have high anti-inflammatory capacities. Happy eating.

  6. I've been eating ALDI's sardines in mustard sauce for years and really like them. When I opened the VanCamps today, I thought they were bad! They are so soft - almost seemed as if they had expired so I checked the date and no, apparently good until 2015! YUCK!!!!! Never again!

  7. This brand is nasty. Bring back possum Brand.

  8. Blow the dust off this thread. Recently tried the skinless and boneless variety. Not bad, not bad at all. Really, no skins or bones, a little dry but most skinless/boneless 'deens tend this way. Went back to Big Lots and bought a small stash.

Now the mustard variety. They could have put 2 more fish in the tin and still had room. Bad value for money. Mustard sauce is, ahhh, different. This tin and soda crackers goes well after a sixer of your favorite malt beverage, wth, even better after 12. Just to eat with no brew, be hungry. Very hungry. It does break the monotony of Beach Cliff 'deens tho. So it does have some redeeming qualities.

    1. It's good to hear the S&B are doing better. Yeah, any tin is good with 12 cold ones, that's how I enjoy all my extra tins that did not score high. Waste not want not. Keep popping those tins, James.

  9. I've been eating these things (most frequently the ones in mustard sauce) for years for lunches at work (I make sure to rinse the tins out before disposing -- be a good neighbor!) I agree that they aren't the best, but they are SO much cheaper than any other alternative brand I can find, and while not incredible there is nothing that is objectionable to me about them.

    1. Great to hear! They are a cheap go to. My wouldn't eat agains, is would not eat again alone; with loaf bread... that's a different story. I've been impressed with Chicken of The Sea's new and improved line. Best cheap sardines out there.
