OVERALL: Four to a can, would guess the oil floating in the spring water would be the natural oil of the sardine. The sardines were very soft almost mushy soft. Decent flavor, kind of a being at the ocean after taste. Personal preference is too mushy for me. Out of 5 sardines, I give it a 2.

OVERALL: Three medium sardines (small to port Clyde's standards)They are literally swimming in mustard sauce. Sardines on the soft/mushy side. The sauce is a little runny, but by no means is it over watery, nor does it lack flavor, if you are a fan of sardines in the mustard sauce you will enjoy these. out of 5 sardines, these will receive 3.

PRODUCT OF: POLAND

INGREDIENTS: SOYBEAN OIL, SALT, NATURAL SMOKE FLAVOR

PRICE:$1.49

OVERALL: Five to a can. Does not look appealing at all. "SELECT SMALL" Who the hell are they trying to fool. The smoke flavor hits you on the first bite, takes away from the fish. Actually has a fishy aftertaste, not a pleasant one. Was very disappointed. I would not recommend it. 1 sardine is all it shall receive.

OVERALL: Four to a can. Actually looks pleasant. Looks how I would have expected the select small to have looked. They are the exact same, same ingredients everything. However, these taste much better, as if they were done by two different canneries. No over pungent after taste, smoke still covers up the sardine taste, only a hint of fishy after taste. Out of 5 sardines, I give it a 2.

PRODUCT OF: POLAND

INGREDIENTS: SOYBEAN OIL, TOMATO PASTE, VINEGAR, SALT, PAPRIKA, CHILI OIL, CAYENNE PEPPER, XANTHAN GUM

PRICE:$1.09

OVERALL: Four to a can, no noticeable odor. Sauce filled to the brim. Nice texture, really nice heat from the sauce, can really taste the Cayenne, on the first bite and your mouth feel the warmth. Can't really taste the fish for the hot sauce. But that's OK, some of the best hot sauce I've tasted from a sardine can. Out of 5 sardines, I give it a 4.

  1. You're brave to endure so many cans of foul tasting CHUM. They cook these to oblivion and all that remains of taste is not good. I feel guilty feeding the remainder of the can to my cats.

  2. My father caught and carried away sardines for Port Clyde Packing Co.[Port Clyde ,Maine],when they were caught, and packed often times the same day!!!!!They tasted like and looked like the way sardines should. Not some imposter ,under the Port Clyde label. The local factories[there were 50 or so when my Dad started],have long since gone the way of many other U.S. business over the years and I'm sorry to have seen them go!!!!!!!!!!The sardine industry provided thousands of jobs to the packers, fisherman, boatbuilders etc., [men and women alike] ,that kept the industry alive ,all those years.

  3. I just managed to get a stack of about 20 cans of the Port Clyde in Louisiana Hot Sauce from the local Big Lots. 'Best By' date was this month and year, 8/13. 90 cents a can. Man! I wouldn't call that hot sauce 'Louisiana' because it's NOT, totally different taste. What it is is some of the hottest fish sauce in a sardine can I've come across. Wish I could find a local source for this product. I only find Port Clyde at the Lots or $ Tree or the like.. The Beech Cliff Poland LHS tins are close but they fall short of the 'Clyde tins.
